The Healthy Eating Index (HEI), which measures diet quality based on the Dietary Guidelines, shows adolescents have a lower intake of vegetables, fruits, and dairy and a higher intake of added sugars compared to younger children.
As a nutrition professional, you are uniquely qualified to guide parents and their adolescent children towards a healthier dietary pattern. Helping adolescents make healthy food and beverage choices early in life is critical before they transition to adulthood to decrease the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases.
3 Unique Strategies to Encourage Healthier Eating
There is little time for adolescents to plan for healthy eating between school, sports, social gatherings, hobbies, and homework. Yet, many teens need help consuming adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D, potassium, fiber, protein, and iron than younger age groups. To help adolescents make smart food choices, encourage parents to experiment with these unique strategies at home.
In an observational study among 534 adolescents, researchers found avocado consumption was associated with better diet quality and higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, dietary fiber, and several vitamins and minerals but not with body weight (1). The Avocado Nutrition Center supported the study. Although the findings cannot be considered causal and more research is needed to generalize the results to larger, more diverse populations, the study suggests avocados support diet quality.
