When is My Child Ready to Eat Avocados?

Your child can begin eating solid food that is soft, mashed, or pureed at about 6 months old.

Did you know the avocado’s smooth, creamy consistency makes it a great and healthy first food for your baby*?

*Before starting or introducing new foods, parents and caregivers should consult a physician or healthcare provider.

Offering healthy foods will help promote healthy habits as they grow, so be sure to provide a variety of fruits and vegetables. The healthy avocado — soft, neutrally flavored, and nutrient-dense — appears to be one of the most ideal complementary and transitional foods available, which can also serve as a gateway food to more nutritional eating patterns across the lifespan.

In the beginning, offer your baby mashed avocado on a spoon. You may also try mixing cereal, veggies, or fruit with mashed avocado along with breast milk or formula to make it smooth. As your baby’s oral skills improve, you can introduce small cubes of soft avocado.

At this age, the pincer grasp (where the thumb and pointer finger meet) is developing, enabling your child to pick up most small amounts of food. If it is a struggle to pick up small pieces of food, they may like thick spears of avocado they can pick up with their whole hand.

How much should they eat?

Breast milk and/or infant formula is still the primary source of nutrition for your child during the first year; however solid foods will gradually take up a bigger part of their meal as time goes on. Start with one or two tablespoons of avocado and watch for signs of fullness.
