Benefits of B Vitamins and Food Sources

B vitamins are a group of eight essential nutrients that play important roles in maintaining health. They work together to support various bodily functions, including energy production, brain health, immune function, and healthy fetal development.

Let’s explore the roles of the eight B vitamins, their potential health benefits, and where your clients can find them in food.

What Are the B Vitamins?

The B vitamins are a group of essential nutrients that support health and well-being. Since B vitamins are water-soluble, any extra is excreted through urine and not stored. Therefore, they need to be continuously replenished.

The B vitamins are:

  • Thiamine (B1)
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Niacin (B3)
  • Pantothenic acid (B5)
  • Pyridoxine (B6)
  • Biotin (B7)
  • Folate (B9)
  • Cobalamin (B12)

Potential Health Benefits of B Vitamins

The B vitamins are considered the building blocks of a healthy body as they have an effect on metabolism, energy, and heart and immune health. Avocados are a good source of folate and pantothenic acid.

Heart health

Folate, along with other B vitamins, is involved in breaking down homocysteine, an amino acid. Elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood are associated with an increased risk for heart disease and stroke, and may be an indication of a deficiency in some B vitamins, including folate.

A meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials with over 47,000 cardiovascular patients showed those who received less than or equal to 2 mg/day of folic acid therapy had reduced risk of stroke. The mean age of patients was 59-69 years old. The folate therapy had no impact on all-cause or CVD mortality or risk of CHD.

Energy production

Because the B vitamins help support energy production, clients may wonder: does vitamin b give you energy? Pantothenic acid is a B vitamin that helps the body break down sugar and then converts that sugar to energy. Therefore, b vitamins can help increase your energy levels. One-third of a medium avocado is a good source of pantothenic acid (15% of the Daily Value).

Brain and immune health

B vitamins may support brain health. Vitamin B6 also appears to help support the body’s immune system.

One serving of avocado contains 6% of the Daily Value of vitamin B6, which helps the body make antibodies, maintain normal nerve function, and produce red blood cells.

Healthy fetal development

Folate is important for women considering pregnancy and for those that are pregnant. Pregnant women need folate to reduce developmental defects, such as spina bifida. Avocados are a good source of folate.

Sources of Vitamin B

B vitamins can be found in foods like beef, salmon, tofu, chicken, milk, eggs, lentils, almonds, sunflower seeds, brown rice, citrus fruits, and leafy greens. Avocado also has many B vitamins, including B5, B6, and B9.

The Bottom Line

B vitamins play vital roles in health. They support a range of potential health benefits for the cardiovascular system, energy, brain health, immune function, and fetal development. A balanced diet rich in B vitamins is essential for overall health, and including sources such as avocado can help ensure your clients get enough of this important nutrient.
