How to Rock the Guac

Guacamole. For many, the first introduction to the creamy, refreshing taste of fresh avocados.

Guacamole is such a big deal, it even has its own ‘day.’ National Guacamole Day. We like to keep our guacamole simple and authentic, but you can really tweak it any way you’d like. Guacamole doesn’t have to be reserved as a side for your tortilla chips, either. You can add it to any variety of meals for a boost in flavor, nutrients and color.

Tip #1:

When making your guacamole, make sure you are using avocados that are perfectly ripe.

Tip #2:

Make sure you incorporate citrus.

When you add lemon or lime juice to your guacamole, you are not only adding a bite of citrus that complements the creamy richness of the avocado, you are also helping to preserve the avocados’ freshness. Citrus helps to slow down the process of oxidation (or the darkening of the green avocado flesh). Try adding ~1 Tbsp. of fresh lemon or lime juice to your guacamole.

Tip #3:

Serve it up with fresh and colorful veggies.

It’s simple. More veggies = more vitamins. And, when you eat fresh avocado and veggies together, something else can happen, too. Some vitamins (specifically vitamins A, D, E and K) found in colorful vegetables are called ‘fat-soluble,’ meaning they are better absorbed when eaten with foods containing fats (like fresh avocado). What does this mean? When you dip your carrot stick in guacamole, you may enhance your body’s ability to absorb the vitamins from the carrot compared to if you just ate the carrot alone. Think about that the next time you’re putting out your guacamole dippers.
