Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. (90% lean) ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 sweet onion, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. reduced sodium Worchestershire sauce
  • sea salt (to taste)
  • freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 2 ripe, fresh avocados, halved, pitted, peeled and mashed
  • 4 whole wheat buns
  • Optional toppings that add flavor and more fruit/veggies to the diet:

  • fresh avocado, halved, pitted, peeled and sliced
  • arugula leaves
  • butter, iceberg or romaine lettuces
  • spring mix salad greens
  • baby spinach
  • tomatoes, sliced
  • grilled onions (red, white, yellow, green)
  • grilled or roasted peppers or chiles
  • grilled pineapple
  • Salsa:

  • fruit salsa
  • grilled or sautéed mushrooms
  • other roasted or grilled veggies

Instructions:

  1. Place ground beef in a medium bowl. Sprinkle with garlic powder, onion, Worchestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Mix together using a large wooden spoon (or your hands) until combined. Form into 4 patties.
  2. Place a large skillet over medium high heat. Add burgers and cook until well browned, about 5 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until desired doneness is reached, about 2 minutes for medium, 3 for medium well, or 4 for well done.
  3. Transfer burgers to buns. Add desired toppings. Serve hot.
