Nourish Your Skin

By Melissa Mitri, RD

Skincare is more than serums and facials— Healthy skin starts from within! Protect and nourish your skin for a healthy sun-kissed glow. In addition to practicing good skin care and protection, eating the best skin foods — like avocados — can also help promote radiance.

Here are 5 tips for nourishing your skin all year long.

Hydrate

Most of us don’t meet the recommended water intake guidelines. Besides drinking water, you can also increase your fluid intake by eating more hydrating foods. These skin foods help support your skin’s natural elasticity and suppleness.

Take avocados, for example. Water is a whopping 72% of an avocado’s weight. In addition to aiming for at least eight glasses of water daily, incorporate hydrating fruits and vegetables like avocados to support healthful skin.

In a clinical trial among 39 healthy, overweight women, researchers found that daily intake of one avocado for eight weeks improved firmness and elasticity of forehead skin. The Avocado Nutrition Center supported the study. Although these findings are limited and more research is needed to confirm the results, the study suggests a potential role for eating avocados in skin health.

Choose fresh fruits and vegetables

Get ready to give your body, including your skin, a VIP treatment like no other! Wave goodbye to sugar and refined carbs and say hello to a rainbow of fresh fruits and veggies because these delicious powerhouses are essential when it comes to keeping your skin glowing.

Avocados contain no sugar or refined carbohydrates and provide unsaturated fats, fiber, and water.

Up your vitamin intake

Enjoying a rainbow of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables can help protect your skin from free radicals and environmental damage. When it comes to your skin health, specifically, several nutrients are considered powerhouses—including vitamins C and E, and niacin.

Per 50-gram serving, avocados provide 4% of the Daily Value for vitamin C and 6% of the Daily Value for vitamin E and niacin.

Use sun protection

The classic sun treatment still holds true – apply sunscreen! In addition to avoiding prolonged sun exposure, use quality sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 daily. Reapply every 90 minutes or after swimming or sweating for continued protection.

Have a solid skincare routine

Give your skin extra TLC with a nourishing and calming skincare routine. Look for products that contain gentle skin ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E and are free from harsh chemicals like parabens or phthalates.

By implementing these 5 simple tips, including nourishing skin food like avocados, plenty of water, and proper skincare, you’ll be on your way to enjoying a glowing complexion all year long.
